Uniform rules hide different demand
A single minimum or maximum can make a complex allocation process manageable, but it assumes categories, products, sizes, launch periods, and channels behave similarly. When demand and stock depth differ, the rule can protect simplicity while creating lost sales in one area and markdown exposure in another.
Clarify the decision grain
Teams need a shared definition of style, color, size, product identifier, category, division, and channel. Allocation logic becomes fragile when the business decision and the data model use different grains. The product should make the level of every rule and recommendation explicit.
Distinguish demand from discounted clearance
Historical sales can overstate healthy demand when full-price and heavily discounted units are combined. Allocation should understand sales quality, launch velocity, sell-through, markdown, broken-size risk, and stock cover. The objective is not simply to place more units; it is to place the right depth where demand is most valuable.
Compare opportunity across channels
A channel's past share may reflect what it received rather than what it could have sold. Comparing retail and e-commerce at appropriate category levels helps reveal where performance is constrained by allocation. This is a causal question, so the system should show uncertainty and support controlled changes rather than declare potential from one metric.
Turn caps into governed recommendations
Dynamic caps can respond to sales velocity, product characteristics, category potential, stock cover, and availability. Human buyers and operators still need visibility into the evidence, constraints, and exceptions. A useful product recommends, explains, captures overrides, and learns from the outcome.
Measure the commercial loop
Track full-price sell-through, availability, lost-sales signals, markdown, broken sizes, freshness, replenishment response, and forecast error. The system becomes more valuable when every allocation decision produces evidence that improves the next one.
